Video: How to Setup Yahoo! IMAP Email in Outlook

Developers change their products from time-to-time. While the look of the software may differ, these Yahoo! IMAP Email setup instructions can be used with many versions (PC: 2007, 2010, 2013, 2016, MAC: 2008, 2011, 2016) of Outlook. Yahoo! IMAP settings are included in the directions below.

This tutorial is geared towards beginners. Watch the video all the way through, to understand the process and view the notes. Then, start over, pausing at each slide, to give yourself time to complete each step.

Slide 4: Yahoo! Security Warning
If you are using an older version of email software, you might need to login into your Yahoo! account and turn the “Allow apps that use less secure sign in” option on. Yahoo! warns that this may pose a security risk and that it is best to update to a more secure version of the email software.

Slide 5: Yahoo! Security Settings
If you have no other option than to use an older version of the email software AND you understand the security risks, follow the instructions at the end of this tutorial. Otherwise, use a newer version OR use the Yahoo! website and Apps instead.

Slide 6: Step One
Open Outlook either on your device or in the cloud. Recent versions will look similar to the next slide. If you are using an earlier version of Outlook, it may look different, but the settings will be the same.

Click the “File” tab that is located near the top left of the window. A box will display that looks similar to the one in the next slide.

Click the “Add Account” button and select the “Manual setup or additional server types” option. Then, click the “Next” button.

Select the “POP or IMAP” option. Then, click the “Next” button.

Slide 14: Step Five
Enter your account information and the Yahoo! IMAP settings. You will need:
• Your Yahoo Username
• Your Yahoo Password
• imap.mail.yahoo.com
• smtp.mail.yahoo.com

Enter the data in the boxes provided. Remember to:
• Select Account Type: IMAP
• Check “Remember password”
FYI: IMAP syncs your email to the mail server while the POP3 option does not.

Slide 17: Step Five SMTP Note
Your Internet Service Provider might require you to use their Outgoing Mail Server instead of Yahoo!’s. Look in the note below for a hyperlink to Outgoing Mail Server settings for other ISP’s.

Slide 18: Step Six
Click the “More Settings...” button near the lower right of the box. Then, click the “Outgoing Server” tab.

Slide 19: Step Seven
Check “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”
Select “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”

Slide 20: Step Eight
Click the “Advanced” tab.
Incoming server: Enter 993 and set encryption to “SSL”
Outgoing server: Enter 587 and set encryption to “Auto”
Click the “OK” button.

Slide 21: Step Nine
Wait for Outlook to test the settings. Then, click the “Close” button.

Slide 22: Errors?
If Outlook flags any errors, go back to the settings and make sure they are all correct. Then, test again. If you need to change your Yahoo! Account Settings, see the next slide.

If your settings still do not work, you may be using an unsecured version of email software. You can login into your Yahoo! account and turn the “Allow apps that use less secure sign in” option on. Yahoo! warns that this may pose a security risk and that it is best to update to a more secure version of the email software.

If you must change your Yahoo! Account Settings:
• Login at login.yahoo.com
• Click your avatar (top right) and select “Account Info”
• Click “Account security” on left
• Scroll down to “Allow apps that use less secure sign in” 
• Move the slider to the right and follow the instructions
• Retest your settings in Outlook
